Although Duval County Public Schools offers students many types of school choice options from which they may select, an equally excellent education is available in all traditional schools. Each student residing in Duval County has a “neighborhood” school based on the residential address. Some neighborhood schools open their doors to students who may wish to transfer. This year the following neighborhood schools are participating as school choice options.

George Washington Carver Elementary School

Carver is a “Foundations School” which is implimenting a grant which involving safety and civility. A model discipline program known as “Champs” is used in classrooms. The school made a “B” in 2005-2006 and provides excellent customer service and a safe learning environment.

Landon Middle School

Landon Middle School is focused on providing all students with a well-rounded academic program utilizing “teamed-looping,” an enhancement of the traditional middle school team whereby the faculty moves from the 7th to 8th Grade with their students. This reduces the amount of lost time at the start of the 8th Grade since the students and the faculty have already developed their relationship and academic focus. 6th Grade students are focused on transition to middle school and their personal adjustment during these developmental years of physical, emotional, and academic growth. The 6th Grade teachers are dedicated to creating a compassionate and student-centered learning environment.

Mayport Middle School

Southside Middle School features academic enrichment, technology and art and music. It was named a National Model School in 1986 and prides itself on providing academically challenging coursework that is coupled with a variety of support services to ensure that students are successful. Southside has a dedicated technology program where students apply basic skills of communication, mathematics and science appropriate to technological content and learning activities. The technology lab ignites the students’ curiosity and increases their aspirations regarding career fields in engineering, computer technology and science. Southside symphonic and jazz bands have performed in music festivals throughout the U.S. and Toronto, Canada. The art program enables students to develop art appreciation skills through the production of two and three dimensional works of art.
