Schools are identified as Title I when a majority of their students receive free or reduced lunch. These schools receive additional funding to provide additional resources to their students. In Florida our student progress is evaluated both on the state and federal level. The state determines a school grade based on student achievement on the FCAT. The federal government, under the No Child Left Behind Act, also measures student achievement in several different subgroups. While a school can have an overall satisfactory grade under the state evaluation system, unless every one of the student subgroups shows improvement a school is deemed to not have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the federal guidelines. Families who attend these schools are then given choices regarding their child’s education which can range from supplemental tutoring to attending another school.
Option 1: Your child may receive Supplemental Educational Services (free tutoring) from a provider approved by the Florida Department of Education. More information will be sent in August. To qualify for tutoring students must: 1) Remain in their current school and 2) Be eligible to receive free or reduced price lunch.
Option 2: You may choose to transfer your child to another public school. Two choices will be given to you based on your home address. Transportation will be provided if your child lives more than two miles from the school that is chosen. Stops may be up to 1.5 miles from the residence and may be located at or near a school. Your child may continue to attend this school until they graduate to the next level. However, once your child’s home school is no longer in need of improvement, transportation becomes the responsibility of the parent. Additionally, if your choice school becomes identified as a school in need of improvement, your child may remain at the choice school but the district will no longer provide transportation. The deadline to apply is June 16. You will receive a letter later in the summer notifying you of your child’s school and transportation information.
