Charter schools are publicly funded, nonsectarian schools that operate under a contract, or charter, with the Duval County School Board. They are managed by a governing board and are open to all students, but the majority of Duval County public charter schools target at-risk students. Charter schools are free from many state regulations, and teachers must be certified.

Procedures: Parents must complete the application for the charter school a student wishes to attend. (There are elementary, middle, and high school charter schools.) Transportation may or may not be provided based on a charter school’s individual policy.
