Career Academies are high school based “schools-within-schools.” This business-driven model incorporates a number of innovative features, including a family-like atmosphere, integration of academic and career related curriculum, and involvement of employers in a number of roles. The academies have been shown to have positive impact on school performance, including attendance, credits, Grades and graduation rates.

The Career Academy models features:

  • College preparation academic coursework that is coordinated with a career focus.
  • A small group of teachers who work as a team to plan and manage the program.
  • A variety of motivation al activities, including parental and business partner support, a well-developed reward structure, guest speakers, field trips, mentors, job shadowing, work site experiences, community service projects, advanced credit opportunities, and regular monitoring of progress with feedback to students.
  • A focus that continues beyond high school and into college, technical training and work.

The Career Academies located at Robert E. Lee, Andrew Jackson, William Raines, Wolfson, Frank H. Peterson and A. Philip Randolph are also magnet programs and students apply through the regular magnet application process. The Career Academies housed at Englewood, N.B. Forrest, First Coast, Terry Parker, Sandalwood, Edward H. White high schools are not magnet programs but may have openings for students from other high schools, after accommodating neighborhood students. Applications for these programs may be obtained at www.duvalchoice.com and are submitted directly to the school.

Note: Transportation is not provided to the non-magnet Career Academy programs.

B.E.A.M. (Building, Engineering, Architecture, Manufacturing) Academy
The B.E.A.M. Academy prepares students for postsecondary education and careers in the building, engineering, architecture and manufacturing industries. Academic classes with a career-related theme are designed to give students a rigorous and relevant learning experience. The curriculum includes hands-on assignments and the opportunity to actually build several structures, including a miniature house. Students also gain valuable and useful knowledge through job shadows, apprenticeships, and internships with local businesses. The Florida Home Builders Association, FCCJ, and SkillsUSA will award scholarships to deserving students who are interested in pursuing postsecondary degrees or certificates.”

Education and Training Services Academy
If you are creative, motivated, like working with others, enjoy taking leadership responsibility and are interested in the exciting fields of education and training, this is the program for you! The Career Academy will welcome our inaugural class in 2007-2008. You will join a cohort of 75 selected students who will participate in leadership and career related activities while studying together in core classes with a dedicated team of academy teachers. In addition to a challenging academic and career curriculum, you will participate in team building activities, field experiences, and community service projects. You can prepare for future college experiences while participating in the total high school program of academics, athletics, and the arts.

International Business Academy
Three pathways are available to students in this academy. First, the International Business pathway focuses on business principles in the global economy. Representative course work includes accounting applications, international business systems, and international finance and law. Upon academy completion, students will be qualified for jobs as manager trainees and information technology assistants. Second, in the Hospitality and Tourism pathway, representative coursework includes computer technology for travel and tourism, marketing management for travel and tourism, and introduction to hospitality and tourism. Upon academy completion, students will be qualified for jobs as guest service agents and travel and destination specialists. Third, in the Culinary Arts pathway, academic and technical studies are integrated, emphasizing and building proficiency in food production and cooking, cost control, nutrition, workplace safety, catering and menu development. A school-site restaurant emphasizes restaurant management. Completion of the academic courses leads to academic opportunities at four-year colleges, community colleges, and schools for specialized instruction, as well as certification in some areas. All academy students work to qualify for Bright Futures, Gold Medallion, and Gold Seal Diploma scholarships.

Academy of Coastal and Environmental Sciences (ACES)
There is a pathway on water resources available to students of this academy. Students completing the Academy of Coastal and Environmental Sciences are prepared to enter advanced training and education as well as post graduation employment in specialized fields of environmental sciences or businesses. Whether as college graduates or as trainees, Terry Parker students will use their broad, transferable knowledge gained from environmental studies to participate in industry planning, management, finance, technology, and labor uses, as well as community health, safety, and environmental issues. Content includes knowledge of government regulations, ecosystem awareness including land, air, and water resources, sampling and safety procedures, as well as compliance in monitoring and quality assurance procedures. Instruction emphasizes field experiences centering on the coastal salt marsh and aquatic ecosystems of the National Park Service’s Timucuan Preserve and Fort Caroline National Monument areas. Students collaborate with Park Service naturalists, Jacksonville University professors, and Terry Parker faculty to develop and implement hands-on projects that simulate real-world scientific research. All academy students work to qualify for Bright Futures, Gold Medallion, and Gold Seal Diploma scholarships.
